RPG Media Monday - Happy Dave Arneson Day!

Tomorrow, being October 1st, the anniversary of the birth of Dave Arneson, co-author of Original Dungeons & Dragons [(O)D&D], it is celebrated by many as Dave Arneson Day, much as the anniversary of the birth of Gary Gygax is proclaimed as his day.  Amid some on-again, off-again grousing in some circles about who-did-what-when-and-so-forth, I wrote a recent blog post stating my position that there is plenty of credit to go around.  So, enjoy the day, and if you're curious, you can find some bio info on him here.  One group who takes Dave Arneson's participation in the invention of D&D very serious were the subject of a movie titled, "SECRETS of BLACKMOOR: The True History of Dungeons & Dragons" which you can rent on Vimeo here.

RPG Media Monday - One Hit Die Update

A few years ago, I posted about One Hit Die, a YouTube series which is a "a fantasy comedy genre mashup of 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Office.'"  I recently received an email from the creator, Spencer Estabrooks to let me know they have a third season "launching 1 episode per week for the next seven weeks."  If you've never watched before, start with episode one.

RPG Media Monday - HBO's Westworld

Well, the buzz and hype are really ramping up for HBO's Westworld.  I mentioned Westworld a few times on this blog a couple years ago when I first got wind of it, a couple more times since, and I am definitely looking forward to seeing how this turn out.  The original Westworld (1973) was a very innovative movie that became a cult classic.  It also had a sequel entitled Future World (1976) that was received less well but was still cool in a kitschy kind of way.  What HBO is doing is taking the original concept and updating it for an ongoing series.

The excitement around this new venture stems largely from HBO investing quite a bit of money into effects and star power.  Some of the big names involved include: Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, and Jimmi Simpson.

Today, they released a new trailer that is being touted as "Mature" though it seems less so than that ominous tag might suggest.  Watch it yourself, if you dare, but you were warned . . .

Throwback Thursday - Joanne Whalley, Sorsha, & Beowulf

I've been catching up lately on a few shows I had meant to watch when they were first on including Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands.  It's a twelve-episode first season of a re-imagining of the epic poem.  One of the female leads in the show who plays the Rheda, Hrothgar's wife in the epic, is played by Joanne Whalley who some might remember as Sorsha from the classic fantasy film, Willow (1988).  As I mention elsewhere, "She has a much deserved lead and acquits herself well. Since first seeing her as Sorsha in Willow and enjoying her in The Borgias and Wolf Hall, she makes the most of her role in this. Something else I am liking about this show is the many gray areas. They make Beowulf a clear-cut Hero, and purposefully make him sort of flat in that regard, and make the creatures (trolls, barghests, etc) very straightforward antagonists. But the dimensions of all of the rest of the major players from Walley on down are manifold, neither villains nor heroes. Lots of character depth and many characters to juggle, leading to some cool mysteries and twists. There's an early murder which was resolved in a way I did not see coming, and not for lack of clues. This show is much better than the critics let on."

Regarding Beowulf, "I first read the 1963 Burton Raffel translation when I was a youngster, as it was readily available in paperback. That introduced me to the text and the story. I have since read a number of modern translation and haven't read anything older than Raffel's attempt. The 1991 alliterative verse translation by Frederick Rebsamen cleaves as close to a faithful Modern English translation as I have read and uses mirrored pages for the passages in Old English, which can be helpful for those wanted to learn the older language and understand the translation process more closely. The 1999 Seamus Heaney version is a fun read but it should be said that he strives for a poetic outcome over an accurate translation and is often criticized for that. I still enjoyed it. There's a 2005 B&N published translation that I have heard is good, academically, but I haven't seen it yet. It would have been too late to make this list here."

Finally,  now I've been inspired to grab that Tolkien translation from a few years ago, since HPB just sent me a 40% Off online coupon and they had the hardcover new for $20 to start (with $4 shipping). Here's the listing on Amazon for comparison.  But let's take a last look back at Sorsha deciding she wants something and going for it in a clip from Willow . . . sadly, that doesn't work out so well for one of the guards who gets toasted.

RPG Media Monday - The Herculoids

If you wanted to run a bizarre RPG campaign you could do a lot worse than to model it on The Herculoids!  This was a show that debuted in the late Sixties for a brief run of 18 episodes (split into 36 eleven-minute segments) then even more briefly resurfaced in the early Eighties.  The Herculoids "battled to defend their planet from menaces on Amzot/Quasar and from outer space. All of the Herculoids displayed Human-level intelligence—employing precision teamwork and complex tactics—as well as emotions, and Zandor and Tara both displayed a working knowledge of complex alien technologies as well as the ability to pilot interstellar spacecraft. But essentially, Zandor, Tara, Dorno, and the Herculoids were all apparently fighting to keep Amzot/Quasar a technology-free, primitive planet."  Read more about it here.

You can pick up the episodes from Amazon.com here.
