Sunday Funnies - Death, Dismemberment, & Beheadings

As gamers, we watch a lot of our favorite characters and villains get killed on television and the big screen in many, many ways.  We sometimes chuckle about it, which is probably wrong to do.  Today is one of those days.  To start us off, The Nerdist had a fine article here recently on how to build your own Star Wars Severed Limbs collection though I dug around a bit online and found a complete one to picture for this blog post.

Of course, to get the full picture, you really need to go to starwars.wikia.com and the entry on Dismemberment which recounts the total severity of lost limbs here.

Day 12 - Favorite Dungeon Type/Location

Nothing is more fun to run or explore, in my humble opinion, than a tomb.  For the traps, the ancient vibe, the undead, and the treasure, nothing beats the bang-for-your-buck impact of a good, tight tomb.  Throw in a religious-related curse and you've got just about everything you need for a well-rounded fun time.

One of the first Swords & Sorcery short stories I read was The Thing in the Crypt.  It was written by L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter as part of their pastiche work when they were collecting the Robert E. Howard Conan stories, putting them in chronological order and adding in some of their own to fill in some spots.  Often they used some of Howard's unfinished material but sometimes wrote them completely on their own, together or separately.  I was young and was new to the character and genre, so it didn't matter to me that this wasn't strictly penned by Howard.

As the story goes, Conan escapes captivity at the beginning of the tale, is chased across a landscape by wolves with only his broken chains to fend them off from time to time, and winds up taking refuge in a crypt in some hills.  Within, he manages to get a fire started and discovers the inhabitant of the crypt, a mummified giant of a man with a sword across his knees.  Knowing he will need that blade if he is ever to survive what awaits him outside, he seizes the weapon and gives out a warcry which animates the corpse.  Although he is able to hold the monster at bay, it isn't until he throws it on the fire that it is destroyed.  That story is probably what first caused me to fall in love with the genre and set me on a path I still follow to this day.  It also cemented my love of tombs as a great location for tabletop RPG exploration.

The original D&D 30-Day Challenge meme had a duplication and was a bit more edition-specific than I thought was useful for my purposes, so I made some adjustments and had some folks on the Internet give it the once-over.  Here's the result and what I will be doing through the month of June as "CMG Extras."

Day 6 - "Favorite Deity"

Over a decade ago, under the Creative Mountain Games name, I published the Toeffrun Creation Myth PDF. In it, I outlined the pantheon of deities used in my Grymvald setting (which I wrote of earlier in this series under "Day 4 - Favorite Game World").  Among the Supernals and Archaics is a vile Mistress of Death know as Nekrem.  She is easily the most feared goddess in my setting.  So much so that peasants, upon viewing a full moon, will make a circle of their thumb and index finger, hold it up to their eye, and mutter, "Her Eye, the Moon."  They do this as a common superstition, a warding off of her evil, to keep themselves from harm.  Many will not even venture out on such a night.

The Kingdom of Toeffrus has long since given way to the Ronkian Empire and its former duchies and baronies have become petty kingdoms in their own right.  They all vie to place one of their own on the imperial throne and some will even enlist the adherents of Nekrem to aid them in their struggles.  Many of her followers are fierce killers, thugs, and assassins ready to do the bidding of some lord or lady if proper tribute is forthcoming for their mistress.  Some nobles will go so far as to convert to her religion in hopes of gaining the continual support of this shadowy cult.  It is also hoped that the cult will not be used by their opponents once the throne is claimed.

Although this offering was first released during Era 3.XE, ninety-seven percent of it is flavor text, and thus just as useful to any Medieval Fantasy setting today.  And, it is currently on sale here!
