Throwback Thursday - Joanne Whalley, Sorsha, & Beowulf

I've been catching up lately on a few shows I had meant to watch when they were first on including Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands.  It's a twelve-episode first season of a re-imagining of the epic poem.  One of the female leads in the show who plays the Rheda, Hrothgar's wife in the epic, is played by Joanne Whalley who some might remember as Sorsha from the classic fantasy film, Willow (1988).  As I mention elsewhere, "She has a much deserved lead and acquits herself well. Since first seeing her as Sorsha in Willow and enjoying her in The Borgias and Wolf Hall, she makes the most of her role in this. Something else I am liking about this show is the many gray areas. They make Beowulf a clear-cut Hero, and purposefully make him sort of flat in that regard, and make the creatures (trolls, barghests, etc) very straightforward antagonists. But the dimensions of all of the rest of the major players from Walley on down are manifold, neither villains nor heroes. Lots of character depth and many characters to juggle, leading to some cool mysteries and twists. There's an early murder which was resolved in a way I did not see coming, and not for lack of clues. This show is much better than the critics let on."

Regarding Beowulf, "I first read the 1963 Burton Raffel translation when I was a youngster, as it was readily available in paperback. That introduced me to the text and the story. I have since read a number of modern translation and haven't read anything older than Raffel's attempt. The 1991 alliterative verse translation by Frederick Rebsamen cleaves as close to a faithful Modern English translation as I have read and uses mirrored pages for the passages in Old English, which can be helpful for those wanted to learn the older language and understand the translation process more closely. The 1999 Seamus Heaney version is a fun read but it should be said that he strives for a poetic outcome over an accurate translation and is often criticized for that. I still enjoyed it. There's a 2005 B&N published translation that I have heard is good, academically, but I haven't seen it yet. It would have been too late to make this list here."

Finally,  now I've been inspired to grab that Tolkien translation from a few years ago, since HPB just sent me a 40% Off online coupon and they had the hardcover new for $20 to start (with $4 shipping). Here's the listing on Amazon for comparison.  But let's take a last look back at Sorsha deciding she wants something and going for it in a clip from Willow . . . sadly, that doesn't work out so well for one of the guards who gets toasted.

Throwback Thursday - Stranger Things

By now you will probably have heard that the Netflix series Stranger Things doesn't simply makes a passing reference to Dungeons & Dragons but rather makes the game integral to the plot of the eight episode arc.  I've added three videos to the end of this post, the first two being trailers but the third being the first eight minutes of episode one which gives some idea of the tone of the series as well as how important D&D is to the story.  As you'll be able to tell, the series is set in the 1980s (with some admitted anachronisms) and hits some notes akin to E.T., The Goonies, and X-Files.  It is well-cast, well- acted, and well-written all the way from start to finish.  This will be one for the video collections of any gamer, young or old.

Also, on birthmoviesdeath.com, you can get a more in-depth understanding of the quality of this series from Scott Wampler by reading his article titled "Drop What You’re Doing And Watch STRANGER THINGS On Netflix Right Now" here.  He does a good job avoiding spoilers but steer clear of the comments section to be sure nothing is ruined if you have yet to watch the series.  After you have watched it, check out the polygon.com article "The real star of Stranger Things is Dungeons & Dragons" here.  You'll already know this but it's a good read anyway.

Finally, jump over to roebeast.blogspot.com for an interview with miniatures sculpture John Dennett.  He's the fella who sculpted the original Demogorgon from the Fantasy Lords line of Grenadier Miniatures in 1984.  The monster is referenced in the series beyond the early appearance of the miniature but the first showing of the figure makes a lasting impression.  The interview is here and John Dennett's own website, where he still shares his work today, is here.

And now, those videos I promised . . .

RPG Media Monday - Movie Witches

First off, this isn't a post about Wicca as it is practiced or observed in the modern world, simply a look at several movies from recent years that depict fantastical witches in a fictional way.  With all of our grundies now properly unbunched, let's first look at Season of the Witch (2011).  This is fantastical in many ways but is grounded primarily in the Medieval era even starting off with scenes in the Crusades.  While some folks are not a fan of Nicholas Cage, and for me he is hit and miss, this one comes off as a very good D&D-esque movie with an adventuring party and a mission.  The special effects are fine to good while the story, as much as the characters make this a film RPGers should definitely watch.  With Ron Perlman, Claire Foy, and Christopher Lee as part of the cast, it's an easy movie to like despite having the lowest IMDb rating of the three I am presenting in this post at 5.4.

Next up, take a gander at Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013).  It has a Medieval Fantasy feel moreso than a Fairytale feel the name might imply.  The stars of this, including Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, and Famke Janssen, help carry this movie along and it has a number of recognizable character actors in the supporting cast as well.  The story might be a bit choppy but it is fairly straightforward recasting the named leads as all grown up and not going to take it any more.  There are a lot of magical effects in this film and much of it is quite inventive and spectacular.  Don't expect the moon and an RPGer can have quite a bit of fun watching this one.

Finally, check out The Last Witch Hunter (2015) for a modern setting with flashbacks to Norse mythological times.  Some very good effects throughout this movie though a few left me wishing the film had been more consistent on that score.  Vin Diesel, Rose Leslie, Elijah Wood, and Michael Caine make up the core of the cast with some memorable villains seeing less screen time.  In some scenes, Rose Leslie really steals the show and her character actually feels better written than the others, with Caine's minor character having some surprising depth as well.  There are a couple of points in the story that might feel confusing and I've often said the script seems like it was edited for time and perhaps had some things cut that should have been kept.  Nevertheless, worth seeing if only for the better magical effects.
